PART 1

Foundations of Bilingual Development

This session introduces key principles of second language acquisition and how they align with Montessori philosophy. Participants will explore essential considerations for dual language classrooms and engage in guided breakout discussions and live Q&A to connect theory with real-world classroom practice.

PART 3

Encouraging Communication in Both Languages

Learn effective techniques to motivate children to confidently use both languages, especially the non-dominant one, in peer interactions. This session explores ways to create an environment where bilingual communication is normalized and celebrated. Journaling prompts will support self-reflection and help educators identify meaningful ways to support their learners.

PART 2

Integrating Language into Daily Routines

Discover practical strategies for naturally weaving two languages into the flow of the day using Montessori lessons and materials. This session emphasizes consistency, clarity, and balance in language exposure. Participants will engage in collaborative breakout tasks that help translate these strategies into classroom-ready plans.

PART 4

Working with Families and Child's Culture

Understand how to build a language-rich environment that values and reflects children’s cultural identities. This session focuses on communication with families, setting realistic expectations for bilingual development, and creating meaningful partnerships. It concludes with a final Q&A and a reflective closing to synthesize learning and prepare for classroom application.

Flora Lewis

Gabrielle Kotkov, MSc

Gabrielle Kotkov is an educator, consultant, and the founder of Multilingual Montessori. She is an AMI-trained 3–6 Montessori guide and has worked in schools in New York, Texas, England, and Italy. She holds a BA in Italian and Art History from Vassar College, an MSc in Child Studies from Linköping University in Sweden, an AMI 3–6 Diploma from the Maria Montessori Institute in London, and a TESOL Certification from Columbia University Teachers College.

Gabrielle is on the teaching faculty at the West Side Montessori School Teacher Education Program in NYC, an AMS-accredited training program, where she conducts field consultations and teaches several Early Childhood courses, including the Language module. She is also part of the content development team at Trillium Montessori. Her work has been published in the AMS Montessori in Contemporary Culture Journal, and she is a recipient of the 2025 AMS Impact Award.

Gabrielle is passionate about fostering inclusive, multilingual classrooms where every child’s language and culture are celebrated, and where educators feel confident guiding multilingual learners. Gabrielle speaks English, Italian, French, and a bit of Spanish.
