Understanding Toileting and the Role of the Adult

We begin with the foundation—understanding toileting not just as a task, but as an essential part of the child's holistic development.

This day will explore:

  • How toileting is connected to emotional, physical, language, and cognitive growth
  • The influence of modern diaper use on children’s readiness
  • Observing natural signs of biofeedback and readiness in young children
  • The role of the adult: calm guidance, consistency, and respect
  • How to align approaches between home and school
  • Practical ways to support children over 2 years old as they transition toward independence

DAY 2

The Prepared Environment and Practical Implementation

Building on the foundations from Day 1, we shift our focus to the environment and the practical steps that support a successful toileting journey.

This day will cover:

  • How to create a toileting environment that is accessible, inviting, and developmentally appropriate
  • The importance of hygiene, safety, clothing, and child-friendly equipment
  • Making toileting feel natural, expected, and empowering for the child
  • Step-by-step guidance on introducing toilet learning in a Montessori way
  • Language that invites rather than demands
  • Establishing consistent routines and supporting positive toileting behaviors

Zoe Paul

Zoe Paul - AMI Auxiliary Teacher Trainer (0-3), Founder and Director of Studio Montessori School in San Francisco, USA, international speaker and lecturer. Zoe supports teachers, schools and other Montessori organizations, and governments in recruiting, preparing, and sustaining educators for children under three. She speakes English and French, with conversational Arabic. Her work is grounded in a multicultural, interdisciplinary approach to developing teachers and strengthening communities.
