The third plane of development

Why adolescence needs an education of its own.

Montessori described the adolescent as a social newborn, a young person leaving childhood behind and preparing to take a place in adult society. It is a time of profound physical and emotional change, and of a deep need for meaningful work, real responsibility, and a community to belong to.

Her answer was not more lectures and examinations, but an environment where adolescents live and work together, care for the land, produce and exchange, express themselves, and study in a way that connects every subject to real life. This is the vision of the center for study and work, sometimes called the Erdkinder.

This Diploma Course is being prepared to help adults create and sustain that environment, so that each young person can move toward independence through their own effort.

My vision of the future is no longer of people taking exams, but of individuals passing from one stage of independence to a higher, by means of their own activity, through their own effort.
